William Randolph Hearst (yes the man who made a shit ton of money only to go crazy and start collecting his pee in jars) started a smear campaign against marijuana in the 1930's. He successfully set out to destroy any possibility of using hemp for paper production, even though it was more resilient, cheaper and better for the planet, because of his holdings in the timber industry.
