Movie Review: Away We Go
e feeling film in that the couple who stars in the movie have quirky cute little conversations and wear indie clothes and and pat themselves on the back for living a meager existence while secretly wishing for more. They think they are "fuckups" while at the same time thinking they are better than most people, aww the no-so-subtle ideology of Indieism... But this couple is older, not some starry eyed 21 year olds who's goofy youth is mistaken for eclecticism. They are a mature couple in their mid-30's who have a wanted albeit unplanned pregnancy and find themselves in the most exciting and scary place ever: the place of being generally untethered to any place or direction. So they travel around to different places in North America experiencing life in different scenarios with different people. Each place they visit tells the story of how people are living and parenting. Some parents are so vile it makes your skin crawl, some stories are so heartfelt you might shed a tear. Either way Away We Go pulls at some definite heart strings as it is a very honest, and at times hilarious, about parenting and what can go right and so so wrong. Credit director Sam Mendes for not being a Judd Apatow and sugar coating everything, this movie is pretty raw in its tender story telling of a couple about to have a baby, FOREVER altering their lives. The message is more inclined to people, unlike myself, that are thinking of raising children, the message being: Raising kids can be hell, better hope you have someone you love to share it with! And most importantly, you better WANT IT.
Best part of the movie?? THE AWESOME CAST!! John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph, Allison Janney, Catherine O'Hara, Jeff Daniels, Paul Schneider, Carmen Ejogo, Chris Messina, Melanie Lynskey, Josh Hamilton, Jim Gaffigan and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Best Performance of the Movie!!! Hilarious!). Also the soundtrack is almost entirely Alexi Murdoch and very beautiful. The movie is shot very richly with warm rich tones, it's great for a cloudy day movie spell with a loved one.
