Why are hamburgers called that when there is no ham in them??

Turns out hamburgers AREN'T an American invention. They were invented in Hamburg, Germany, hence the name. DAMN IT! Is there NO American culture?! Either way Americans LOVE our hamburgers, check out the facts:

--Ranking #1 among all restaurants with 26,000 stores in 119 countries, McDonald's serves billions of hamburgers worldwide.

--On average, Americans eat 3 hamburgers a week

--McDonald's has sold 12 hamburgers for every person in the world

--60% of all sandwiches eaten are hamburgers

--The largest In and Out Burger ordered was a "100X100", which cost $100.

And as a follow up, if you made a burger made of ham, what then would you call it??
