Memorial Day and Veterans Day...so whats the difference??
I found it slightly sad that as I enjoyed my day off yesterday I really wasn't sure what the day stood for. I know that the military grave yard up by serene Cabrillo, beautiful in it's macabre purpose, was full of people all yesterday as I tried to take a morning jog up there. I think Americans are just so thankful for a day off we fail to remember what actually happened on that day and take time to remember it. For most of us Memorial Day means get drunk on a boat or at a BBQ day, Fourth of July means get drunk on the beach then marvel at fireworks day and Thanksgiving means stuff your face and drink enough to ignore the fact that you don't necessarily LIKE your family day. Americans only have 15 days off in a work year. When we get a free day to relax we don't have time to remember and that's sad because the real meaning of Memorial Day and Veterans Day is to honor those who give their life for our country and well being, no matter how misguided the intentions of the current head of state.
Memorial Day and Veterans Day Explained
Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.
While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.
