Obama to Appear on ‘Tonight Show’

NY TIMES

By Helene Cooper

President Obama will be making a guest appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Thursday, a White House official said, in a rare personal visit by a commander in chief to late night television.

Mr. Obama will swing by the Leno show as part of his trip to southern California. The White House official said that Mr. Obama plans to talk about the economy with Mr. Leno and said he will try to focus on substance, possibly a tall task given the show’s format.

On This Day In History: War in Iraq begins

War In Iraq: 6 Years, $800 billion, 4,578 coalition deaths
Read More About War Reactions on CNN
On this day in 2003, the United States, along with coalition forces primarily from the United Kingdom, initiates war on Iraq. Just after explosions began to rock Baghdad, Iraq's capital, U.S. President George W. Bush announced in a televised address, "At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger." President Bush and his advisors built much of their case for war on the idea that Iraq, under dictator Saddam Hussein, possessed or was in the process of building weapons of mass destruction.

Hostilities began about 90 minutes after the U.S.-imposed deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face war passed. The first targets, which Bush said were "of military importance," were hit with Tomahawk cruise missiles from U.S. fighter-bombers and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf. In response to the attacks, Republic of Iraq radio in Baghdad announced, "the evil ones, the enemies of God, the homeland and humanity, have committed the stupidity of aggression against our homeland and people."

Though Saddam Hussein had declared in early March 2003 that, "it is without doubt that the faithful will be victorious against aggression," he went into hiding soon after the American invasion, speaking to his people only through an occasional audiotape. Coalition forces were able to topple his regime and capture Iraq's major cities in just three weeks, sustaining few casualties. President Bush declared the end of major combat operations on May 1, 2003. Despite the defeat of conventional military forces in Iraq, an insurgency has continued an intense guerrilla war in the nation in the years since military victory was announced, resulting in thousands of coalition military, insurgent and civilian deaths.

After an intense manhunt, U.S. soldiers found Saddam Hussein hiding in a six-to-eight-foot deep hole, nine miles outside his hometown of Tikrit. He did not resist and was uninjured during the arrest. A soldier at the scene described him as "a man resigned to his fate." Hussein was arrested and began trial for crimes against his people, including mass killings, in October 2005.
On November 6, 2006, Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. After an unsuccessful appeal, he was executed on December 30, 2006.

Bush received harsh criticism for the war. Critics claimed his administration primarily sought control of Iraq's vast oil resources, or that the war was in retaliation for an attempt on former President George H.W. Bush's life, ordered by Hussein, in 1990. Revelations that intelligence regarding the Iraq/Niger yellowcake deal was faulty bolstered anti-war sentiment. Bush denied accusations that his administration manipulated intelligence to justify a war and insisted the paramount goal of the war was to rid Iraq of Hussein, stabilize the Middle East and bring democracy to Iraq. U.S. forces successfully captured Hussein, who had gone into hiding shortly after the start of war, on December 15, 2003.

Although Bush announced "mission accomplished" and the end of combat operations on May 1, 2003, Iraq continued to experience ongoing deadly attacks by insurgents while U.S. and coalition troops and civilian contractors attempted to establish an Iraqi army and police force and establish a freely elected government. In the first four years of the war, American casualities stood at more than 3,000 with more than 23,000 wounded, while Iraqi civilian casualties were estimated at more than 50,000.

No weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.

SXSW Intrigue: Janelle Monáe [Stubb's; 8 p.m.]

From Pitchfork:
Near the end of futurist funk fashionista Janelle Monáe's set last night she stood above the crowd, popped a Superman pose, and flopped onto the audience. Keep in mind that this is at SXSW-- where rabid fan-dom is rare-- and that the OutKast affiliate is not exactly super-famous at the moment. But there was no hesitation involved in Monáe's flyover move. She looked straight ahead and dropped. Of course, people carried her-- pretty far, too.

Monáe's absurdist combination of funkadelic groove, girl-group bop, and grunge makes Andre 3000's rock experiments look tame. While many of her songs may sound like "Hey Ya" remixes (and her Dre doppelganger guitarist has definitely seen that video about a million times too many), they often split into odd, operatic angles. Her unique vocal phrasing could be described as oompa-loompa-esque . And just when she seemed to take her mother ship past the outer limits, she broke out a jazzy version of Nat King Cole's "Smile" to bring everything back down safely. She's already a star in her own mind, she's just waiting for everyone else to catch up. They just might.

Hollywood Bowl 2009 Schedule

I absolutely love the Hollywood Bowl. I've seen Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros, Band of Horses and more. I saw The Decemberists perform with the LA Philharmonic and it changed my fucking life, I was sobbing with gratitude, still chokes me up to this day. There's this thin breeze of air that floats through that place that you somehow still feel despite the waves of music crashing over you. Wow, and the light shows they do there?? The Radiohead light show (pictured below) was unbelievable, cutting edge, beautiful, no way they could be upstaged but the light show wasn't going away without a fight! Didn't even matter that at our great seats we were rubbing shoulders with the people on The Office. For all the bad attitudes, traffic horror, and grungy buildings we complain about in LA, there is CULTURE there and we don't get enough of that in this ever-beautiful, perpetual vacation town of ours. We like to make a day of it, grab dinner somewhere new before or after the show. Did I mention you can bring food and wine in the Bowl?? Awesome.
Below I have provided my top picks for this seasons Hollywood Bowl performances:

Hollywood Bowl 2009 Season Highlights

June 21 Femi Kuti • Santigold • Raphael Saadiq

July 5 Death Cab w/ the LA Philharmonic • Tegan and Sara • The New Pornographers

July 15 Natalie Cole

August 5 Miles Davis / Gil Evans: Still Ahead

August 9 Reggae Night VII

August 26 Dizzie Gillespie All-Star Big Band

How to Tie a Tie - Expert Instructions on How to Tie a Tie

Chances are you dudes (and behind the fashion times Avril Wannabe's) are having to wear ties for job interviews or upcoming weddings and graduations. Who EVEN knows how to do that anymore?? Girlfriends, boyfriends, wives, husbands and lovers, take not (pun intended), it's pretty sexy to tie your man's tie...

More Websites for Tie Tyin' Fun

Jack In the Box: New Logo, New Shakes

I was going to post another Great American Fat Maker, courtesy of Jack in the Boxes Oreo Cookie Shake. I went to their website and couldn't find it! It was replaced by much more reasonable waistline friendly fruit smoothies. With flavors like orange, pomegranite, mango and stawberry banana at 250-400 calories anyone can enjoy a nice cold beverage for upcoming summer. As a new health nut you'd think I'd be jumping for joy but, um, I'm actually sort of sad. Those motherfuckers were DELICIOUS!!! They weren't worth the 1300 CALORIES (again you need 2000 for the entire day) but man o day, just one thick sip was enough...ever sucked down a Oreo Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Shake? So good....

Pitchfork: Bob Dylans Port-O-Potty Funking Up The Neighborhood

From Pitchfork:

If you lived next to Bob Dylan, you might expect some strange sounds coming from beyond the fence. But how about strange smells? Strange smells that smell like shit mixed with chemicals, to be precise? According to the L.A. Times, the Bard's neighbors are complaining about noxious odors coming from a port-a-potty located on Dylan's compound in Malibu. And if the Times didn't already run with the "blowin' in the wind" wordplay, someone else would have.

While this story is tons of fun for anyone who doesn't live next to Bob Dylan, it seems quite unpleasant for those who do. According to the Times, since the stench became a problem last September (!), several people claim to have fallen ill, possibly due to the grossness. One not-dramatic-at-all neighbor set up five industrial-sized fans in their yard to combat the port-a-smell. The same family also came up with the money quote: "Mr. Civil Rights is killing our civil rights."

The outhouse is apparently used by Dylan's security team, which is sad to think about-- these people are forced to use a fake toilet at work and then they get yelled at for using it. Bob: There's this thing called Clear Springs Glade...

Thanks to Richard Anderson for the tip.

In much less important news, Dylan's new album, Together Through Life, is out April 28 on Columbia.

Happy St. Patricks Day!!

All but one person in my office is wearing green, sucks for THAT guy...Each year I get less and less of that URGE to throw back car bombs and fill my body with green beer (one bad green barf memory can stay with you for a long long time) but the day is festive in it's own right! There are plenty of Irish bars to visit tonight (You should be fine by choosing bars that begin with an O', be careful with bars that begin with Mc, they may be Scottish and a bit cranky on a day like this haha). There are Irish punk bands and live music swelling to a drunken cresecendo check out local blog SD Dialed In for some of those mentions. The Gaslamp is having it's annual bro n ho Shamrocks Drunkfest. Hillcrest is also getting in on the action with a shop local campaign called Tuesday Night Out and for those who wanna belt it out on this great green day check out The Ruby Room for Too Kool for Karaoke's salute to St. Pats "Greener Than Thou St Pattyfest." There is an exciting exhibit at The Museum of Art called Black Womanhood, here is an excerpt of its description:

"By contrasting historic representations of the African female body with contemporary representations of Black Womanhood, the exhibition peels back the layers of social, cultural, and political realities that have influenced the creation of stereotypes about black women. Black Womanhood promotes and encourages a deeper understanding of the various ways in which ideas about and responses to the black female body have been shaped as much by past histories as by contemporary experiences."

And At The Museum of Man:

The San Diego Museum of Man welcomes the Mosaic Arts International 2009 Exhibition, Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA). Held in conjunction with SAMA's annual conference in San Diego, this juried exhibition showcases the best in contemporary mosaics from SAMA's diverse international membership.

On This Day In History: Saint Patrick dies

On this day in 461 A.D., Saint Patrick, Christian missionary, bishop and apostle of Ireland, dies at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland.

Much of what is known about Patrick's legendary life comes from the Confessio, a book he wrote during his last years. Born in Great Britain, probably in Scotland, to a well-to-do Christian family of Roman citizenship, Patrick was captured and enslaved at age 16 by Irish marauders. For the next six years, he worked as a herder in Ireland, turning to a deepening religious faith for comfort. Following the counsel of a voice he heard in a dream one night, he escaped and found passage on a ship to Britain, where he was eventually reunited with his family.

According to the Confessio, in Britain Patrick had another dream, in which an individual named Victoricus gave him a letter, entitled "The Voice of the Irish." As he read it, Patrick seemed to hear the voices of Irishmen pleading him to return to their country and walk among them once more. After studying for the priesthood, Patrick was ordained a bishop. He arrived in Ireland in 433 and began preaching the Gospel, converting many thousands of Irish and building churches around the country. After 40 years of living in poverty, teaching, traveling and working tirelessly, Patrick died on March 17, 461 in Saul, where he had built his first church.

Since that time, countless legends have grown up around Patrick. Made the patron saint of Ireland, he is said to have baptized hundreds of people on a single day, and to have used a three-leaf clover--the famous shamrock--to describe the Holy Trinity. In art, he is often portrayed trampling on snakes, in accordance with the belief that he drove those reptiles out of Ireland. For thousands of years, the Irish have observed the day of Saint Patrick's death as a religious holiday, attending church in the morning and celebrating with food and drink in the afternoon. The first St. Patrick's Day parade, though, took place not in Ireland, but the United States, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City in 1762. As the years went on, the parades became a show of unity and strength for persecuted Irish-American immigrants, and then a popular celebration of Irish-American heritage. The party went global in 1995, when the Irish government began a large-scale campaign to market St. Patrick's Day as a way of driving tourism and showcasing Ireland's many charms to the rest of the world. Today, March 17 is a day of international celebration, as millions of people around the globe put on their best green clothing to drink beer, watch parades and toast the luck of the Irish.

John Stewart Outshines, nay, Pulverizes Stock Expert

If you haven't seen this incredible interview WATCH IT. John Stewart has become the, until now, silent voice of a nation completely bilked out of their life savings by huge corporations just playing a huge financial game. One that THEY completely understand and that we have no idea about. We've all seen the devastating aftermath of their greed and now we must pay taxes to bail out the people who wreaked all the havoc in the first place, after they worked hard to blame it on home buyers!! Capitalism works best if everyone is geared for greed AND knows the game. Otherwise, only 1% of a population gets rich. Like America.

Obama calls AIG bonuses an 'outrage'

President Obama said today he will attempt to block $165 million in bonuses to executives at ailing insurance giant AIG. The president expressed dismay and anger over the bonuses at AIG, which has received $173 billion in U.S. government bailouts over the past six months. "How do they justify this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat?"

On This Day In History: My Lai massacre takes place in Vietnam

In what would become the most publicized war atrocity committed by U.S. troops in Vietnam, a platoon slaughters between 200 and 500 unarmed villagers at My Lai 4, a cluster of hamlets in the coastal lowlands of the northernmost region of South Vietnam.

My Lai 4 was situated in a heavily mined region where Viet Cong guerrillas were firmly entrenched and numerous members of the participating platoon had been killed or maimed during the preceding month. Lt. William L. Calley, a platoon leader, was leading his men on a search-and-destroy mission; the unit entered the village only to find women, children, and old men. Frustrated by unanswered losses due to snipers and mines, the soldiers took out their anger on the villagers. During the ensuing massacre, several old men were bayoneted; some women and children praying outside the local temple were shot in the back of the head; and at least one girl was raped before being killed. Others were systematically rounded up and led to a nearby ditch where they were executed.

Reportedly, the killing was only stopped when Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, an aero-scout helicopter pilot, landed his helicopter between the Americans and the fleeing South Vietnamese, confronting the soldiers and blocking them from further action against the villagers. The incident was subsequently covered up, but came to light a year later. An Army board of inquiry investigated the massacre and produced a list of 30 persons who knew of the atrocity. Only 14, including Calley and his company commander, Captain Ernest Medina, were charged with crimes. All eventually had their charges dismissed or were acquitted by courts-martial except Calley, who was found guilty of personally murdering 22 civilians and sentenced to life imprisonment. His sentence was reduced to 20 years by the Court of Military Appeals and further reduced later to 10 years by the Secretary of the Army. Proclaimed by much of the public as a "scapegoat," Calley was paroled in 1974 after having served about a third of his 10-year sentence.

Band Review: Minmae, Roxy Jones, Dreaming of Tanks

I saw Dreaming of Tanks last night at The Casbah. It was near dead when I walked in, but I was there at the unholy hour of 9 PM!! I only went out to chill with some coworkers one of whom insisted we check out his friends band (Dreaming of Tanks). Who knew i'd be blown away. Shit, you get all high and mighty and start talking trash about a "stale music scene" and then you're smacked in the face by virtual current scene strangers (who have been supposedly been playing forever) that you've never heard. To be fair I was told they have totally new material and a new awesome front man. If you saw them years ago erase everything you know about them (thats what my co-workers said). Im going to step far out on the San Diego Blasphemy Limb and say: They sound sort of like Pinback but better!! Burn-ish. Ha, luckily not enough people read this wittle blog for me to get shit for that! This band is a three piece that makes so much damn music you wonder where they are hiding their other musicians! Not only are the drum beats tight and diverse but the bass and guitar dance around each other in this almost psychedelically beautiful music with a clean yet gritty punk edge (via well placed guitar distortion and jam like riffs and solos). The drummer (Francis) has some awesome syncopation going on with crisp, tight and fresh drum lines. The great bassist (Jaime) is a huge part of what makes it sound different from other band in the same file, if you have a three piece the bass really does have to step it up if you want to avoid things sounding flat. The bass lines are very intricate and absolutely beautiful, it's not about being back up in that dept for Dreaming and I love when you can really hear the bass and it's even showcased at times. And then the front man and guitarist (Lance). Damn dude, never hurts to have a band fronted by a super talented guitarist who can just tear it up. We were treated to some beautiful, very engaging, very again, fresh, sounding guitar riffs, melodies and solos. It definentely got a the point more than once where you had to yell "Holy Shit this sounds bad ass!!" in your friends ear (and you really did have to scream cuz the sound was so god damned loud). The three parts together climb all over each other without sounding muddy or getting overcomplicated and bloated. Each member contributes 100% and so you end up with this bad ass sounding band playing at 300%. They handed out free pro looking CD's when they finished but my friends said it was their old stuff from years ago and didnt have any of the new material we had heard. BUMMER!!! Get an EP out!! Let me manage your band, I want to take you on tour!! Check out Dreaming of Tanks the next chance you get!!!

Minmae (I couldn't find pictures of Dreaming of Tanks and It's too hard for me to take pictures while Im rocking out and listening to the music!)

I also saw local indie rock band Roxy Jones rocking the Casbah and Minmae. Ok Minmae was SO GOOD TOO!! They melted my fucking face off more than once. Front man Sean fucking LAID IT DOWN with this soulful, makes you orgasm in your pants, murmur Holy Shit over and over, cant take No Dancing for an answer long bluesy delicious solo while his awesome band just backed it up superbly. They had an incredible sound, lots of songs to dance too. It was rock and roll!! They were all men (as opposed to waifish, moody, diminutive, quiet, pretentious emo kids posing as rockers) and they are obviously all skilled musicians who know what they are doing. They come out of Portland but Sean lived in San Diego for seven years. I suppose that is why the excruciatingly embarrassing crowd reaction to their didn't completely digust him like it did me. Holy shit this band just rocks the fuck out and then like four people are clapping and there is one weak Wooo in the silence following these epics songs. A+ for keeping your composure in the face of total lame ass ness. Fuck man, makes it hard to believe the Casbah is the birth place of SD punk and rock and roll. Minmae is heading out on a west coast tour before heading back home!

St. Patty's Day Parade!!

The One Day we all get to "be" Irish and drink and dance with abandon, I love it!! Cheers to green beer, corned beef and hash, shamrocks, parades, kilts and all things cheesy and lovable about American St. Patricks Day celebrating!!

Official St. Patricks Day Parade, Saturday 14th, 11 AM around 6th and Laurel!!!

NOTE: The SD St. Patricks Day Parade is a pretty rag tag operation. It's ghetto and I love it, makes for great drunken social commentary (good hearted shit talkin'/ people watchin'). The announcers mic goes in and out, the "beauty queens" waving from convertibles have sashes that read Ms. Jamul and Ms. Irish Princess of El Cajon sponsored by mom n pop places like Petes Hardware and Green Grove Diner (made those up hehe). It seems like a small town parade minus the great high school band drum lines (the HS bands blow around here!). But spirits are high and people are already starting to drink and there are hot fire man. The thing is, if you get boozy with your good friends and get into the spirit and dance and blow whistles and cheer it's a blast!!! There is a festival later that day for those of you who can't wake up that early!!

It's Friday The 13th Again and The Ides of March On Sunday

Such an ominous weekend!!! A literary and culturally ominous day haha. I like to get into the spirit of superstition, what can I say:)

The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martias) is the name of the date 15 March in the Roman calendar. The term ides was used for the 15th day of the months of March, May, July, and October, and the 13th day of the other eight months. In Roman times, the Ides of March was a festive day dedicated to the god Mars and a military parade was usually held. In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BC, the story of which was famously dramatized in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar.

Friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of good or bad luck. In the Gregorian calendar, this day occurs at least once, but at most 3 times a year.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Smoking Dope

In the last few months, as media interest in marijuana policy continues to rise more and more instances of marijuana smoking by international heros (Michael Phelps), the media on the left AND right(Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Beck) and now elected officials (Schwarzenegger) have cropped up. I was watching The Daily Show and Lewis Black had this hilarious segment how the recession is threatening to turn our society Catholic haha. Included in his diatribe was a lil' video clip where Arnold Schwarzenegger is smoking weed as a younger man and loving it!! It's about 2:43 minutes in but watch the whole thing, it's pretty interesting. Oh and sad-ish.

Also found a Time article on the subject. Check out the closing quote:

TIME MAGAZINE (Read The Rest)
In response, retired Orange County Superior Court Judge James Gray, a longtime proponent of legalization, estimates that legalizing pot and thus ceasing to arrest, prosecute and imprison non-violent offenders could save the state an additional $1 billion a year. "We couldn't make this drug any more available if we tried," he says. "Not only do we have those problems, along with glamorizing it by making it illegal, but we also have the crime and corruption that go along with it." He adds, "Unfortunately, every society in the history of mankind has had some form of mind-altering, sometimes addictive substances to use, to misuse, abuse or get addicted to. Get used to it. They're here to stay. So, let's try to reduce those harms and right now we couldn't do it worse if we tried."

Neat Homes for the Homeless

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Brenda Gardenhire shows off her new home with pride. It looks like an oversized shopping cart covered with a khaki canvas. But to her, it's "wonderful" -- a stepping stone to get her off the streets and get her life back in order.

"It's like your own home, your own apartment, your own room," she said, showing off the 7-foot-long living space on wheels. "No one else can come in here but me."

Gardenhire is talking about her makeshift home called an EDAR, which stands for Everyone Deserves A Roof. The units are being distributed to homeless people in the Los Angeles area by the Everyone Deserves A Roof nonprofit organization.

It's the brainchild of "Revenge of the Nerds" movie producer Peter Samuelson, who has spent much of his life working with charities to help impoverished children.

He got the idea to help the homeless in recent years as he rode his bicycle from Los Angeles to the beach at Santa Monica. Video Watch a canvas-covered 'home' for the homeless.

On those bike rides, he began seeing more and more homeless people. But he didn't just whiz by. He stopped to talk with them -- 62 people in all. One by one, he listened to their needs and what they wanted most: a roof over their heads. And the idea for the EDAR was born.
