Update" The Old Spaghetti Factory Gaslmap- ITS OPEN NOW

YES, now a place I can afford to eat downtown besides Pokez or Lotus (during lunch special time) I just read in the San Diego Business Journal that Dussini's is turning BACK into The Old Spaghetti Factory!! They are owned by the same Portland based restaurant group and the switch was originally made because they thought the current higher end entity would do better in the up and coming San Diego downtown landscape. But peeps be poor now! I'm so excited!! They have their famous "Complete Meal" that comes with bread and awesome garlic butter before your meal. You then get an entree, soup or salad, a drink and the best part, ice cream, all for one low price! I can almost taste the spumoni....oh my god and their insane cheese mizithra! All you job seekers take note! While they will be keeping their bar staff they are looking for other workers!!

Grand Re-opening of Subtext, Tonight!!

Opening Reception: Friday, Jan. 16th, 6-10pm, Live Music from The Traditionist at 9pm

The sketchier (and therefore WAY more hip) side of Little Italy just got a whole lot cooler as
Subtext moves from it's Cedar street location to 2479 Kettner and Laurel right across from The Casbah. They've teamed up with local promoting force Sezio to put on what should be a fun event. Bands (The Tradionist), art (Wonderful photography exhibit by Frank Rogozienski called 366 | 08), cool people and the belly of a plane soaring right over you into the San Diego skyline. This is going to be a great time!

Sushi Fix Review

Sushi can be a volatile meal. As can any fare that includes raw fish, seaweed and an assortment of marine life eggs. If you grew up in a typical American, pb&j eating family you started eating sushi during college mostly to keep up with your friends. You all were swallowing it down whole so as not to taste the slimy lump of fish atop who knows what rolled in who knows what. But then you got used to it, you started enjoying it and know you crave it. You have your fav sushi place, you order rolls with even crazier stuff in an effort to continue impressing your friends who are still only eating cali rolls. Ah, sushi.
If youre in a sushi slump, youre still trying to reconcile with it, or you love it and want to try something new, check out Sushi Fix in Little Italy. It’s definitely a sushi experience unlike any other. It’s basically fast food sushi, which yes I know, I don’t want my raw fish anywhere near the American invention of speed preparation and consumption but this sushi is BOMB. It’s just unnerving at first to see a bunch of young white people wearing whatever they want under a Sushi Fix tee-shirt preparing my sushi. But all it took to change my mind was tasting the sushi. It was their incredibly delicious and my now favorite roll The Spicy Crunchy Cali Roll.

It’s an insane twist on the much familiar cali roll. A creamy red sauce and spicy Siracha are added to the favorite cali roll and tempura crumbles are all over the top. Add on some of their delicious signature eel sauce and you've got an explosion in the mouth. They even have great sides and basics such as their fine miso soup and green tea ice cream. The cost is about the same as a sushi restaurant but you don’t have to add 20% tip unless you want to and you can order it to go if you don't want to chill inside the restaurant or outside on the smoking patio. Check out the Sushi Fix website to get an idea of some of the great rolls they have and then try it out for yourself! Bring your snobby sushi friends and watch them enjoy the laid back sushi eating experience.

Bronx Pizza FAQ's- Funny Stuff

I would never go into Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest high, way to stressful. You gotta know what you want pretty much the minute you roll in, which sucks because they have all sorts of delicious pizzas to look over and come to a decision on. It's a NY pizza joint and the dudes there still operate as if I took the 6 from Manhattan just to get a slice of their delicious goods. I ordered two pies last night for the girls and we were in heaven (we called in the order, picked it up, THEN got irie). We laughed over the frequently asked questions as we were looking up the website to the place. We had the Whitestone with pesto and the pepperoni pizza. They have delicious super thin pizza with fresh, incredibly flavorful ingredients, and a crunchy end crust. The pizza's were enormous and reasonably priced. They don't deliver but well, you can read what they DO do, below.

BRONX PIZZA FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who's from New York?
Matt, Anthony, Peter, Nick and Dennis are from New York. Smity's from Pittsburgh. Everyone else is from different places. We love it when people come in asking who's from the Bronx. We can't wait to hear your story about what neighborhood you're from.

Is this really New York pizza?
Not going to respond to that. Taste it!

What size pizzas do you have?
One size- 18 inch thin crust. If ya can't eat the whole thing, we sell it by the slice.

How much are the slices?
Cheese slices are 2.00. All the others with toppings are 2.50 (tax included). We charge 50 cents for extra toppings on slices that are already available, but please be considerate and limit requests for custom-order slices when the line is running down the sidewalk.

What kind of calzones do you have?
They come with mozzarella, ricotta & parmesan cheese. You name a filling and we'll put it in for you. 50 cents each until we run outta room.

Do you make Sicilian?
Hell no! It is enough work keeping the place going without having to deal with the hellish process of making Sicilian pizza. No wonder those Sicilians are all nuts.

Do you guys serve beer?
We have root beer.

Do you accept debit or credit cards?
No. We take cash and business checks with proper identification.

Do you deliver?
We will deliver it to the counter for ya. That's a NO! If we delivered, we would not be able to give our in-store customers the best possible service. Besides, our customers know where to come for the BEST pizza.

Is that feta cheese on the pizza?
No. And it isn't goat cheese either. It's ricotta cheese. You see, this is not a Greek joint with Greek dancing, and our goat died after he ran into the middle of Washington Street to avoid getting milked.

Is that pizza fresh?
Do you really think we'd sell you pizza we made yesterday? We make so many pizzas in one day that there are times when we can't keep the slice case full. Sometimes we put a pie in there and as quick as an ambulance goes by, the whole pizza is gone.

Who's the boxing fan?
That's Matt, the thin guy with light brown hair and plenty of tattoos. He acquired them (the pictures & tattoos) over the years and was actually a fighter long ago.

Can I park over at the laundromat?
You can only park there for the 30 seconds it takes the tow truck driver to hook up your car. Seriously, AVOID THIS LOT AND THE LOT BEHIND THE SHOP!

How long will it take for my pizza?
It usually takes 10-20 minutes. We are very busy on certain nights and getting more crowded; although, we've managed to stay in that time frame for the most part. Best to call it in! Sometimes we have one in the oven before you order it. That's the "Psychic Friends Pizza" a 2-5 minute wait.

Who designed your website?
Former employee Daniel Martinez. Daniel has no personality.

Christmas Gift Shopping: Station Boutique

El Dorado Bar, a new downtown place to drink

I'm a bit sore I never went to legendary Hong Kong before it was turned into new downtown watering hole El Dorado. The stories I heard were as good as it gets for crusty bars. But this rustic meets modern bar (Think maybe Tractor Tavern?)is no Chee-Chee's. It's been open for weeks now and as a Bankers Hill girls with very few options in the Downtown/East Village/Cortez Hills area I'll at least give it a try once!

Sezio vs. Adapta Tonite at Cream, last one!!

Photobucket
In my opinion tonight is the most stacked of the three. I must admit, I haven't seen Wes's work but he is both hilarious and top notch. Jorge does gorgeous whimsical work, I checked out some of his stuff at the Reinventing The Wheel Art Show in Barrio Logan. And then you got Joel P West , great catchy pop folk songs with good lyrics. Check out Sezio

EVEN more UPDATEs: Beloved San Diego Band, The Muslims, Changes Their Name

To The Soft Pack. I'm going to be honest right off the bat. I'm also going to be as politically incorrect as some might have thought their band name was (and maybe the reason they changed it?). I think the name name is gay. And the word gay has tons of different meanings so don't go all Hillary Duff on me and tell me it's derogatory. The name totally blows. Which stinks because The Muslims make some of the BEST music out right now. Their name emobodied the "We don't give a fuck attitude" that comes from the era of the type of music they make (and the best way to explain that cool post punk distant stare thing lead singer Matt Lamkin has when he performs). I don't know about you but when I said the name The Muslims I wasn't think of Qur’an text or anything.

They are one of my favorite bands of all time. Their new songs are insane, they are catching on like wildfire, everyone who hears them is instantly a fan, the dudes in the band are top notch. But damn. That band name just....reeks of lamenicity. I dunno for some reason I think of old balls....or some unattractive hick with a huge beer belly and a soft pack of cheap cigarettes in the pocket of his yellow tee.....Geez, Ill try to be more positive. It's Thanksgiving Day and I'm thankful The Soft Pack (I tried, sounds lame, can't do it) are making music. Oooo on the flip side now I can be all pretentious when they make it big and continue to call them The Muslims because I knew them whence....Haha I need to go to bed. Im like a young child giddy on Christmas Day for presents. Except i'm thinking of turkey and cranberry sauce.....and my aunts "cider" (hot whiskey in a bowl Aunty, really?)

Statement in a bulletin and on The Muslims Myspace Page:

WE HAVE CHANGED THE NAME OF OUR GROUP TO "THE SOFT PACK". Working on new material and firing on all four cylinders, we feel strongly about this one. It's a new chapter in our lives and hopefully yours. Stay tuned to The Soft Pack page (www.myspace.com/thesoftpack), as we will be posting new videos, music, and junk in the coming weeks. We are pumped. Have a great Thanksgiving and keep it loose. Your buddies, The Soft Pack

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Looks like Spin Magazine caught the comment I left on The Muslims page:

NEWS
Muslims Fan Deserves Tattoo Refund
The San Diego, CA, quartet changes its name to the Soft Pack -- and fan Heather Ace isn't happy.
BY MELISSA GOLDSTEIN 12.01.08 8:00 AM

Don't you hate it when you fall in love and have your darling's name tattooed on your shoulder, only to have him cheat on you.... Laser tattoo removal treatment hurts!
Consider the similar plight of longtime Muslims fan Heather Ace: The San Diego quartet just announced they were changing their name from the Muslims to the Soft Pack. They explained the move, kind of, not really, on their MySpace page: "Working on new material and firing on all four cylinders, we feel strongly about this one. It's a new chapter in our lives and hopefully yours."
Which brings us to Heather, who responded to the news by posting: "Fuck. I just got 'The Muslims' tattooed across my back in old English."
We feel for Heather, even though we don't quite understand the "Old English" part. Then again, if we were the Soft Pack, we'd opt to run on six -- or maybe even eight -- cylinders, instead of "four." We didn't get into rock'n'roll to improve our gas mileage.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE 2
The Guardian UK Music Blog has added their two cents on the issue too:

The Muslims' name shame
When you're a band blessed with a brilliant name, why on earth would you voluntarily change it to the Soft Pack?

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE 3
Had a great time at Riviera Supper Club and Turquoise Room (review to come) continued to after party and got a an idea, found a sharpie and well, Martinez does amazing calligraphy is all I can say! I can't believe people believed I really got this!! I thought it would be funny. I've said my piece/peace. I don't like the name change at all but I love the music so I will probably continue to call them The Muslims and will DEFinitely go to the shows. Check out the video below.

Suicide Attempt on The Coronado Bridge

December 02, 2008

Coronado bridge closed both ways

The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge has been closed in both directions as authorities investigate the report of a possible suicide attempt.

Motorists are advised to use the Silver Strand as an alternate route

UPDATE/NOTE: Attempt was unsuccessful!! Supposedly there have been 12th suicides this year. Happens on average of once a month?? Really, in San Diego?? Yea, I suppose I've felt like jumping off a bridge on another one of those motherfucking SUNNY ASS DAYS when you're hung over and you just want to stay in bed and watch movies and eat Mexican food and not feel bad about the fact that this is the only god damn city where you can still hit the beach in DECEMBER!!

Kipper's Trivia Night, Youre never going to win but you'll have a lot of fun

Photobucket
I've been to Kipper's Trivia night two or three times. First couple times resulted in last place. Seems my only friends who want to hit the bar on Monday night would rather get wasted than play Trivia but with categories like "How to Say 'Fuck Your Mother' Around the World", "SNL Moments" and " Gross Ass Foods From All Over" it really is a great time, losing or winning. You can have teams of up to five players, everyone puts in $2 to play and it goes all night long at The Whistlestop. It's going down tonight!! Try something new, check it out, get there early to secure a seat and whatever you do DO NOT YELL OUT THE ANSWERS. Seriously, one of my girl friends almost got punched in the face for it.

The Comedy Store- La Jolla

We went here last Thursday, my friend got free tickets for four to The Comedy store in La Jolla and we were looking for something new to do. I adore stand up but somehow have only been to a stand up comedy show ONCE in San Francisco and it was 50% awesome (one great comic, one horrendous). We four girls hotboxed the car and strolled in, the door guy noted we smelled like herb and laughed. Sweet. We told the box office guy we had reservations and he didn't even check his list, he just stamped our wrists. Sweet again. Thing is, when you leave the Thursday night show, they give you four tickets to come back next Thursday to avoid the $8 cover charge that I'm thinking you can EASILY get away with not paying any sort of way. We were led to our table in a dark room and approached by a cocktail waitress.

The only real fee was the two drink minimum and I was already planning on having three (doubles...). I had a friend (DD) who ordered water and they didn't even care she wasn't drinking. It's really seemed like just a formality to keep bums out. The show started off with a HUGE bang. I think we saw around 12-15 comics doing 5-10 sets each. We laughed through the first 7 non-stop, both the weed and booze helping us to loosen up. It was a great time. Then we had like 2 or 3 duds in a row. Nothing is more awkward than getting your courtesy laugh to sound real in a quiet room with a stand up comic struggling on stage. But then more funny people hit the stage and it was back on. Yea, but then two more crappy ones were rounding out the night, by that time it was like, 11 PM and there were only 13 people in the room. It had been time to leave a while before we finally got up but we were boozy and we love to laugh. And the comic pleaded with us not to leave... haha, Shoot for $12 that was one of the most fun things I've done in SD in awhile. We hung out with the comics after and joked around and then drove back home. Cheap, fun, NEW, night that I am heading back to on Thursday for sure. Call the reservation number on the ticket above and get your free tickets, time to try something new!!
