Amanda's Mystery Corner

I wonder". We all find ourselves pondering the mysteries in life--is there a god? How did the universe come about? Why do dogs smell even after you wash them?

So I've decided to dedicate a few days of the week to search and explore the world wide web of tainted info and bring you useless answers to mini-questions you've always wondered about.

Today's topic Yawning, YAWWWWWNINGGGG.

Count how many times you take a nice, long, deep ohhhh ahhhh yawwwwnn when reading this post. I mainly wanted to know why yawning is so GD contagious. Unfortunately, there's little research done about yawns because it just doesn't seem to bother people! Here's what we do know:

-- In humans, the earliest occurrence of a yawn happens at about 11 weeks after conception - that's BEFORE the baby is born!
-- Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life.
--babies, kids, teenagers, and adults all do it. Some birds, reptiles and most mammals also yawn.

On to why they're contagious:
According to THIS article, "Identifying with another's state of mind while they yawn may trigger an unconscious impersonation....The findings also explain why schizophrenics, who have particular difficulty in doing this, rarely catch yawns," Nature News Service reported.

One hypothesis is that the phenomenon came about when ancestral humans lived in troops, and it was important for them to wake up at the same time. Yawning may have been a way for them to communicate the level of alertness among different group members, Baenninger said.

Today, contagious yawning is just the result of evolution, an instinctive action.

MYSTERY SOLVED. So, how many times did you yawwnnn? Feel better? Must be the oxygen getting into your body and hopefully making you feel great!
